It's tempting to think of solar export as a mini income stream, and it genuinely is one — but it's worth keeping in perspective. At a typical 10c/kWh buy-back rate against a 33c/kWh retail rate, every kWh you export earns you roughly a third of what the same kWh would have saved you if used directly. Shopping around for a better buy-back rate is worthwhile once you've got a system installed, since the gap between retailers can be meaningful, but it shouldn't be the deciding factor in choosing a system size or an installer.
Some retailers bundle buy-back rates into wider "solar plans" with different fixed charges or time-of-use pricing — it pays to compare the full plan, not just the headline buy-back number, since a slightly lower buy-back rate on an otherwise cheaper plan can still come out ahead overall.
